Aims and Objectives of the Institute

  • To undertake experimental and research programme on all aspects of handloom sector.
  • To lay down the highest standards of training for the sector and to devise short-term and long-term training programme for technical personnel to be employed both in handloom and Power loom sectors.
  • To devise channels of service in order to build up a close liaison between the Institute and handloom production units.

The Institutes have fully equipped laboratories and workshops with all types of looms in use both in handloom and powerloom sectors. They have photography and research units as adjuncts.

Experts in the fields of designing, weaving, dyeing, printing and finishing are engaged in creative work in these Institutes. They take up projects linked to technical and other problems facing the handloom sector. Evolving new designs, new techniques, new textures and new colour combinations of different yarns are part of the research activities targeted towards making handlooms more attractive and economical to consumers and thereby improve sales of handlooms and profitability to the weavers. Research is also undertaken on improving tools and equipments used by the weavers to enable them to increase their productivity and reducing the strain of repetitive processes in weaving.

The technical personnel of these Institutes visit production centres, weavers’ co-operatives, etc. and render on-the-spot assistance and also take up their problems for further research at the Institutes spot. Live demonstrations for the benefit of weavers at their workplaces are also arranged as a part of their extension activities such as new designs, improved tools and equipments, matching of colour shades, testing of samples, water analysis, new colour schemes/combinations, etc.
